about

The title of the album says it all - here are 20 random requests, most of which I got $20 for in the past year or so.

Towards the end of 2020 I decided it'd be a cool idea to offer to do requests for people. Since there weren't any live shows to do, I decided to record the songs and send them an mp3. Just like down on Broadway, I decided to charge just $20 a song. Many folks paid more, however, and it was definitely appreciated at a time when there wasn't much work to be had for a musician. Some of these were Christmas presents for my family, and a few others I added as "personal requests" to honor some of the legends we lost in 2020 and 2021.

This was a fun and challenging venture as some of these songs were ones that are pretty outside the norm for me. I covered Billie Eillish for my niece. I did a Luke Combs song for one girl's wedding. One of the songs I'm most proud of from this collection is one I'd never heard previously - "Horses in my Dreams" by PJ Harvey. This song was definitely outside the mainstream to begin with, and that gave me the creativity to approach it in my own way.

Many of these tunes, of course, were songs that I'd done before. But these are not just simple guitar and vocal takes. For many of them I put together a full track and arrangement, something I wouldn't be able to do live. For "Tennessee Whiskey," I enlisted by old Billy Brown bandmates Aaron Roy and Casey Alan, and for a moment it sounds like we're back at Ole' Red or The Grizzly Rose... My friend Renato Buchert requested the Elton John tune "Georgia," so naturally I had to get him to play some keys on it. For other tracks I built a drum beat electronically and played lead guitar and bass, while others I kept more stripped down. But every one of these requests was given its full due and respect, and I don't believe there were any unsatisfied customers.

As for my requests, I had to pay tribute to some of my heroes that passed on these past 2 years. Some unfortunately died because of this virus that has ravaged the entire planet. For John Prine, Charley Pride, Peter Green and Billy Joe Shaver, I offer up these humble interpretations in hopes that their souls are at peace now.

I'll list the artists for every song below. All donations are welcome for this set. Pay what you want, but I can think of a suggestion...
