Goin' Down to Rockwood
03:05
|
|
||
I'm goin to New York City, gonna get me a pizza pie (x2)
Cause down here in Mississippi, all they got is chicken fried
I'm gonna take a freight train above the Mason-Dixon line (x2)
I'll be in New York City just about dinner time
I'm goin down to Rockwood, take my rider by my side (x2)
We can still barrelhouse mama, cause it's on the Lower East Side
If the East River was whiskey and I was a diving duck (x2)
I'd dive down to the bottom, and never would come up

Night Herding Song
01:52
|
|

Oh say, little dogies, why don't you lay down?
You've wandered and trampled all over the ground.
Lay down, little dogies, lay down.
I have cross-herded, trail-herded, circle-herded too
But to keep you together - that's what I can't do.
My horse is leg-weary, and I'm awful tired
But, if I let you get away, I'm sure to get fired.
Bunch up, little dogies, bunch up.

Golden Bird
05:24
|
|
||
Walking along on a path in the mountains
I saw a bird flying way up high
Gold were its wings in the sun of the morning
Flashing at me as it flew through the sky
It's beauty was such, and I felt I must have it
Chased it all day, nearly into the night
Finally angered that I couldn't catch it
Determined that I would stop it in flight.
I found a stone by a mountain stream flowing
Rounded and smoothed by the water's fast flow
It felt so warm and alive in my hand
It was an arrow, my arm was a bow.
Then a flashing of wings, and a cry pierced the air
It fluttered and it fell on the rocks at my feet
Weeping I left it, the thing that had fallen
Blood stained my hands and tears wet my cheek.
Later that night as I lay in my bed
I heard the sound of wings in the air
The room became bathed in a warm, golden glow
I opened my eyes and a woman stood there.
Did not you know when you hurt me so cruelly
I was your love, I was your friend.
You couldn't stand it that I was so free
Now you will never see me again.

If I Had Wings
02:31

|

If I had wings ready to fly
I would fall out of the sky
From the stars, wherever you are
Baby I'd fall

New York Night
08:25
|
|
||
There's a heart beating just a bit too fast
Like a song that you know won't last
There's a girl crying on a Brooklyn road
For a boy that she knows done gone
There's a man on an uptown street
Begging for a little change to eat
There's a seat on a downtown train
Waiting for another worn-out man
Was a long road here and I know it's a long way back
I've been down so long I don't know if I can get up yet
If I can make another dollar I can stay another day
While you're lookin for tomorrow I can find another way
I've had so much hope and sorrow I don't know what else to say
If you'll pass another bottle we might just get past today
Baby just say yes...
I see God and the devil staring back at me in the New York night
There's a hard wind blowing from across the sea in the New York night
